Our Sustainable Materials

We believe in bringing you exceptional performance from the natural world.

Our materials are carefully selected to offer you the ultimate in comfort, warmth and durability, and are sourced from some of the best available renewable sources.

Here are the fantastic sustainable materials we work with:

Linen

Linen is the original sustainable material dating back to the ancient Egyptians. Environmentally friendly, it grows naturally without the need for pesticides, fertiliser or irrigation which is fantastic and why ‘Certified Organic Linen’ doesn't exist, it's just Linen.

Made from the stem of the flax plant, it grows easily but is labour intensive to process, which is why growing it is concentrated in low labour cost countries. Our linen is sourced local to our factories in Sri Lanka and Portugal.

Stronger than cotton, Linen absorbs moisture without holding bacteria, offering excellent anti-microbial properties. It is breathable, keeping you warm in cool weather and cool in warm weather. If left untreated, dyed and unfinished, it is fully biodegradable and recyclable, making it an ideal choice for the conscious shopper.

Piñatex™

Piñatex™ is a man made material derived from nature, sustainably sourced and  cruelty free, making it an excellent alternative to leather.

Working directly with farmers in the Philippines, this innovative material is made from the discarded leaves of the pineapple plant. It's environmentally friendly because it is created with low-water usage, low-production waste and contains no harmful chemicals.

As Piñatex is plant based with zero animal products, it is 100% vegan. It's also breathable, lightweight and supple to work with, ideally suited to footwear as an alternative to real leather, which is not environmentally friendly and hazardous to produce.

Organic Cotton

We only work with Organic Cotton, that is GOTS certified, the Global Organic Textile Standard to ensure organic status of textiles from harvesting through to environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing and labelling. This ensures we are investing in water conservation, cleaner air, better soil and farmer livelihoods. Cotton farming is water intensive, therefore farming is concentrated in high waterfall climates where the crop can be rain-grown.

Organic Cotton is natural and hypoallergenic, making it an ideal choice for those who suffer from allergies. It is strong and durable which makes it hard wearing and low maintenance. It is also breathable and odour free, absorbing moisture from the skin and keeping the body cool. Cotton is biodegradable and 100% Vegan.

FRUMAT™ Apple Skin

Apple Skin is made from the waste produced by the apple juice industry, from apples grown organically in the Italian Alps. The material is created by combining the waste from the production of apple juice into a polyurethane (PU) mixture to make it more flexible and hard-wearing. Unlike other bio-based products, it does not require soil or water for cultivation.

FRUMAT™ Apple skin is superior to other synthetic leather alternatives as it uses less water, chemicals and carbon emissions comparatively. It is breathable and has a more luxurious leather-like look and feel than many other PU alternatives. It is 100% Vegan but only partially biodegradable due to the plastic content.

Eco Microfibre

Eco Microfibre is a man-made material and a good alternative to leather, commonly referred to as Vegan Leather or Faux Leather.

Made from a water-based and solvent-free polyurethane (PU) with a polyester lining, Eco Microfibre is OEKO-TEX certified, a quality standard assurance certification. Similar in texture, look and feel to real leather, it is versatile, hard wearing and 100% vegan. It is breathable, machine washable, easy to maintain and durable.

Eco Microfibre still has a significant environmental impact and is not a long term solution, but it is more environmentally friendly, less toxic and less hazardous than working with real leather.

Cork

Cork is a natural material harvested from the bark of the Cork Oak tree. It has many benefits owing to its layered cell like structure which offers great elasticity and ensures it can be compressed easily without losing any flexibility.

It has a natural resistance to moisture and liquid penetration. Together with its natural ability to absorb vibrations, it is a perfect choice for shoes, providing bounce and flexibility underfoot.

It’s also lightweight, wear-resistant and biodegradable.

COIR

Coir is a mix of coconut husk and natural latex. The latex is added to make the coconut husk more flexible and comfortable to wear. All natural, this is the material we use in our unique Foot Pillow technology.

It moulds to the shape of your foot, and provides cushioning underfoot, alleviating pressure points, supporting joints and reducing fatigue.

Coconut husk is natural and therefore adjusts to hot and cold temperatures, keeping you both warm and dry. It also has natural anti-bacterial properties and prevents odour.

Natural Rubber

Natural Rubber latex is derived from the milky sap of the Lactae Hevea tree. Rubber tappers extract the liquid which is then refined into a dry form of rubber for commercial use.

Rubber is highly resilient, has a large stretch ratio and waterproof. Natural latex rubber is solvent free and more hard wearing than standard petroleum based rubber. We use Natural Latex together with Coconut husk or Natural Cork in our unique Foot Mattresses to add flexibility and comfort underfoot.

We only use Fair Rubber ensuring the improvement of the working and living conditions of the primary producers and the environmentally friendly sustainable production of natural rubber.
